De inception of de university be for 1981 insyd former Imo State under de name of Imo State University, Etiti.[3][4] De university na Sam Mbakwe establish am when e be governor of old Imo State. De main campus be for Etiti, Imo State, while de Law Department be for separate Campus for Aba. Between 1984 and 1985, under de military governorship of General Ike Nwachukwu, de university move go de permanent site for Uturu Okigwe.[5]

After dem create Abia State for 1991, de Uturu campus of de university dem cede am to Abia State, and now dem dey call am Abia State University Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria.[6] De university dey organized in colleges and schools, based on de same collegiate system wey University of Nebraska dey operate.[7]

Studies for Abia State University include: undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees. E get two campuses - de main campus for Uturu; and de College of Law, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine dey for de campus for Umuahia, capital of Abia State, Nigeria.[8][9]
