Na dem establish de varsity by law No. 13 of 2000 by de Anambra State Government wey e get two-campus structure.[5] De main campus of de varsity dey locate for Uli, insyd de former site of de Ekwenugo Okeke Polytechnic, dem formally call Anambra State Polytechnic. De second campus dey locate for Igbariam insyd de former site of de College of Agriculture.[6] De law wey dey establish de varsity phase out de State Polytechnic den de varsity inherit eins assets den liabilities.[7]

For de other hand, de varsity law fail make e repeal de Edict wey dey establish de College of Agriculture, Igbariam, hence, legally de varsity den de college exist side by side for de Igbariam Campus site, til 2006 wen de government relocate de College of Agriculture go Mgbakwu, about fifteen kilometers away from Igbariam.[7]

For 11 September 2014, de varsity change go ein current name after dem pass bill by de Anambra State House of Assembly plus de aim of immortalizing Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, politician den leader of de breakaway Republic of Biafra.[8][9][10][11]

Na Prof Gregory Nwakoby be de Vice Chancellor from 2018 - 2023. Insyd December 5th, 2023. Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha, fnipr, de former Commissioner of Education, Anambra State, take over as de acting Vice Chancellor of de institution.[12][13]

However, insyd 2010 as dem dey construct de College of Medicine den Teaching Hospital for Amaku General Hospital, Awka[18] receive legal backing as de state House of Assembly pass amendment act make e situate third campus of de varsity three campus structure for Uli (Anambra South), Awka (Anambra Central) den Igbariam (Anambra North).[19]

De University Pre-Science Programme, wey insyd 2008, na dem relocate am go Uli Campus, dey wax stronger. So also be de Part-Time/Weekend Degree Programme for de Igbariam Campus.[20]

Towards dis end, Senate approve de de-merging of faculty of Environmental Sciences from de Faculty of Engineering for Uli Campus den de de-merging of Faculty of Arts from Faculty of Social Sciences for Igbariam Campus.
