E start as middle-level national technical den business-oriented learning institution insyd 1972 wey na dem elevate am insyd 2007 make ebe constituent university college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology thru Kenya Gazette notice make e cam turn full-fledged university for three years insyd.[4] However, dis cam later for 14 December 2012 wen Presido Mwai Kibaki officiate den award de institution charter for ceremony insyd dem attend by government officials den higher education stakeholders.

Edey locate 6 km from Nyeri along de Nyeri – Mweiga highway. De college land dey span about 1,000 acres wey dey consist of 350 acres of natural forest, 350 acres of mature coffee den 300 acres of open space for expansion.

For 26 November 2008 construction of multi-purpose resource centre begin. De second phase, out of four, of dis project reach completion insyd late 2010. Edey serve as de main hub give activities den events for de college insyd.

DeKUT start dey operate as sam technical institute for 1978. Since August 2007 go de award of de Charter, e operate as sam constituent university college. Dem grant DeKUT sam charter say make ecam turn degree-awarding institution for 14 December 2012.[5] Edey operate under de Ministry of Education, Science den Technology.

  • Institute of Geomatics, GIS den Remote Sensing;

  • Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management; den Institute of Technical and Professional Studies (ITPS). ITPS dey offer programmes for de technical diploma level.

DeKUT dey six kilometers from Nyeri town along de Nyeri-Nyahururu road, between Mt. Kenya, for de Eastern syd, den Aberdare Mountains, for de western syd.

Dem divide de resource centre go four phases insyd plus de two phases complete. De first den second phase dey include library, lecture theatres den laboratories den supporting infrastructure wey edey serve as de hub of de university ein academic activities. De Academic Block houses ICT labs, lecture rooms den offices engineering labs, workshops, den supporting physics den chemistry labs. De university ein Advanced Manufacturing Training Center (ADMaTC) dey house workshops give all engineering courses.

Dem set up private hostels around de university say so ego house chaw of de students. Sports dey include rugby, football, hockey, basketball den volleyball teams. Edey host de Mt. Kenya 7s rugby tournament every year among oda inter-university tournaments.

Clubs den societies dey include de Christian Union, Catholic Action, Presidential Awards club, Touch Crew International, Actuarial Association of Kimathi den de ICT Club. De ICT Club dey host hackathons.

De students dey represent de Dedan Kimathi University Students' Organization (DeKUTSO) wey dem dey elect every year wey de council get almost 13 officials.

Kimathi get six halls of residence, one wey dey house female students. Chaw of de students dey live off-campus. De school dey provide transport to den from Nyeri town den estates wer sam students dey stay. Off-campus accommodation around de school be readily available as private developers invest for hostels near de school insyd. Off-campus residences dey include Sunrise hostels, Catholic hostels den Greens.

De school mess dey serve de campus plus meals den sam few off-campus food places. De student's Centre be available give students make dem socialize, watch TV den play pool.

Sports facilities dey include rugby football field; volleyball, basketball den badminton courts; den sam field hockey pitch.
