Korle Lagoon

editLocal tradition dey talk say de first people wey dem settle for there be Onamoroko We hunters wey dem establish for de east bank side of de lagoon. De people believe say de lagoon get spirit as dem use demma powers enchant woman dem bell Dede wey e convince de people make dem settle for de location so say dem go worship de spirit. De land come make property give Korle We, wey e be matter of dispute as e be same group as de Onamorokor We.[2] De people wey come settle grow into Jamestown, ebe now de western part of dema city centre as ebe place dem dey get fish until 1950s.[3]

editFor 1961 inside, de Government of Ghana assume ownership for de lagoon. Dem dredge de water body den raise de level of sum land wey dey nearby, so say e go reduce de risk of flooding, wey dem establish industries on drain dem surround den lan dem claim—initially brewing den food processing, later nu cars repairs den electronic scrap processing for Agbogbloshie.[4]
De lagoon dey link go de Gulf of Guinea. Na de Odaw River wey dey feed am, wey dey flow thru Accra ein suburbs, ein catchment area dey cover 60% for de city. De most important destination for stormwater runoff, de river sanso turn highly polluted plus waste, wey dem discharge am for de lagoon inside.[5] De combination of waste wey comot from Odaw River den industries den settlements for de lagoon ein shores lead, by 2002, dem describe am as "one of de most polluted water bodies for earth top". Dis time around, dem establish de unplanned settlement for Old Fadama for de lagoon ein banks, ein population dey peak around 30,000. De government announce ein intention make e clear de area, wey dem believe say e be source of pollution, but dem protest, dis no take place.[4][6][7] For 2007 inside, dem divert de Odaw, now nu dem desilt ein outflow, wey pass directly go de gulf inside, thru kilometre-long outfall.[5]
