Nadia Khiari
Nadia Khiari (Arabic: نادية خياري; born 21 May 1973) be a Tunisian cartoonist, painter, graffiti artist den art teacher. editAcademically, Khiari be a graduate of de Faculty of Plastic Arts insyd Aix-en-Provence, France, wey she dey teach art for de Faculty of Fine Arts insyd Tunis.[3] Insyd 2013 she receive a degree as Docteur Honoris Causa from de University of Liège insyd Belgium.[1]
Artistic career
editApart from social media, na dem publish Khiari ein work insyd magazines such as Siné Mensuel, Courrier International den Zelium. For criticism of former Tunisian presido Ben Ali, she create a cartoon character of a cat dem name Willis. Insyd January 2011, she start de page Willis from Tunis[4] for Facebook top make she air ein feelings about de Arab Spring, wich attract over 56,000 followers insyd August 2021.[1] She confess say she dey draw "to take the heat off certain situations".[3] Secof de former regime ein strict policies of censorship den make she avoid make dem throw am into prison, na she be careful to "learn to trick, to suggest rather than to speak".[5] Na she say of ein artwork den de revolution: "For me it's not a job. It's a freedom. Like I'm being born. Before the revolution, I was a zombie. I think, but I cannot express myself. So I didn't feel like I was alive. With the revolution I was born, like a baby. My first screaming was my drawing. And now for me it's a revolution in my art, totally. I can finally express myself and say what I think and criticize the government. For me I can finally do my passion: cartoons."[6]
Aside from ein cartoons, dem sanso know Khiari for ein work as a graffiti artist.[5] As member of de association 'Cartooning for Peace', she sanso participate insyd French schools plus de programme "Dessine-moi la Méditerranée".[7] Insyd 2020, she publish ein book Willis from Tunis, 10 ans et toujours vivant! plus a foreword by French cartoonist Plantu.[8]
