Tono Dam
Tono Dam be among de largest agricultural dams for western Africa, e dey Kassena-Nankana District insyd Upper East Region, northern Ghana. E be 2km long dam wey dey irrigate like 2,490 hectares of land.[1][2][3]
History
editDem start dey construct de dam in 1975 by one British engineering company be, dem bell am Taysec. Dem plete in 1985. E be Ghana Government wey establish am, de idea be say ego promote food crop production all year by small scale farmers. Dem provide managed irrigation scheme give dem. E be de Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) wey dey manage de dam.[4]
Rehabilitation
editDem do rehabilitation in 2008,dem repair de concrete slabs wey e dey de main gravity canal of de dam.[5] E be Ghana Government wey go claim funding from World Bank den USAID sakof The Ghana Commercial Agricultural Project (GCAP).[6]
Impact
editDe dam dey serve like seven communities plus e dey provide water give farmers for irrigation all year round. E dey help waa sakof e dey increase de cultivating of rice, soya bean, den tomato. Sakof dis, local farmers dema livelihood dey increase. De dam dey form lake plus notable bird habitat.
Disease
editSakof de dam schistosomiasis parasites bunch for de area as dem bleed for de dam top. Dis parasites dey enter de body through de skin wey dem live for de intestinal tract or walls of de bladder inside. E dey cause painful bleeding den sterility as u no treat am.[4]
